  • Karachaganak partners end five-year spat with government
  • Agreement unlocks plans to start expansion at giant oil field

Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Eni SpA and their partners in the Karachaganak oil and gas venture paid $1.3 billion to settle a long-running dispute with Kazakhstan over revenue sharing.

The deal unlocks plans to boost output from the Karachaganak field and funnels additional revenue to the Kazakh economy, which is heading for its first annual contraction in more than two decades amid oil’s slump. While the government is getting less cash than it demanded last year, it’s a larger payment than initially agreed in 2018. read more

In 1969 two Shell ships exploded within 15 days of each other

51 years ago two Shell ships exploded within 15 days of each other

On 14 December 1969, Marpessa, from Shell’s Antilles fleet, exploded during her maiden round voyage. Two Chinese Petty Officers were killed and the 207,000 dwt vessel, over 1,000 feet (328 metres) long, became the largest ship, civil or military, ever to sink. Fifteen days later her sister ship Mactra also blew up and killed two crew-members, but did not sink, and the following day a third VLCC – not a Shell ship, but of very similar design – exploded. All had been undertaking tank-cleaning operations at the time, and the ensuing two-year enquiry established the most probable cause as sparks accidentally generated in the tank’s gaseous atmosphere. The solution was to fill the tank with inner gas during cleaning. read more

Green transition friction prompts wave of resignations at Shell

Dec. 09, 2020 5:26 AM ETRoyal Dutch Shell plc (RDS.A)By: Yoel Minkoff, SA News Editor46 Comments

  • Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A, RDS.B) has been hit by the departure of several clean energy executives amid a split over how aggressively the oil giant should shift towards greener fuels, FT reports.
  • Those include Marc van Gerven, who headed the solar, storage and onshore wind businesses, Eric Bradley, who worked in Shell’s distributed energy division, and Katherine Dixon, a leader in its energy transition strategy team. Other top executives are due to leave the company, though not every move is known to be linked to the pace of change.

Marc van Gerven, who headed the solar, storage and onshore wind businesses at Shell, Eric Bradley, who worked in Shell’s distributed energy division, and Katherine Dixon, a leader in its energy transition strategy team, have all left the company in recent weeks. A NEW BLUEPRINT FOR OIL AND GAS BRIBERY: Carlyle – Shell Oil ties run deep

    Javier Ferrandis

Javier Ferrandis: Researcher: Published December 8, 2020

Extracts from an extensive article by former Shell Petroleum Economist Javier Ferrandis:

The CARLYLE-MUBADALA ALLIANCE: A NEW BLUEPRINT FOR OIL AND GAS BRIBERY

Information about the nine-year period Javier Ferrandis spent at Shell can be found at the foot of this article.

I would argue in this article that the overvalued and questionable purchase of Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala owned CEPSA by the Carlyle group in 2019 was part of a USA government-sponsored bribery operation connected to the transfer of large Oil & Gas concessions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) into the hands of Chinese National Oil Companies and other oil companies based in countries that collaborated with the 1MDB operation and that happen to be main recipients of UAE crude oil exports. The timing of the 1MDB operation and specifically the purchase of Coastal Energy by Abu-Dhabi owned CEPSA and the 1MDB Chinese middleman Jho Low was chosen to coincide exactly with the historic expiration of the 75 years old Abu-Dhabi oil concessions. read more
