Additional Works Worth Including in a Shell Research Library

The following do not all have Shell as their sole subject, but each helps place Shell’s development, controversies or corporate methods in their wider historical context.

1978

Shell and BP in South Africa

Author/Publisher: Anti-Apartheid Movement / Haslemere Group
Format: Booklet / campaign publication

A critical contemporary examination of Shell and BP’s role in South Africa and Southern Africa during apartheid and international attempts to impose oil sanctions. (AAM Archives)

2001

Shell, Greenpeace and the Brent Spar

Author: Grant Jordan

Already listed above, but worth singling out as perhaps the most substantial book-length academic study of one individual Shell public-relations crisis. It reconstructs internal corporate dynamics as well as the Greenpeace campaign. (Springer)

2005

Shell Shock: The Secrets and Spin of an Oil Giant

Authors: Ian Cummins and John Beasant

Also deserving special prominence because it is one of the relatively few independent books attempting to cover Shell as a corporation in its entirety, rather than a single region or controversy. Its publication followed directly after the reserves scandal. (Google Books)

A Useful Way to Classify the Shell Literature

The books above fall into several very different evidential categories.

Official or Shell-supported corporate history

Examples include:

History of the Royal Dutch

Shell Oil Company: A Story of Achievement

Shell: 75 Years Serving America

A Century in Oil

Shell in New Zealand

A History of Royal Dutch Shell

125 Years of Shell in Russia

These are particularly useful for dates, corporate structures, management changes, acquisitions, projects and Shell’s own interpretation of its history.

Independent histories

Examples include:

Bearsted

Enterprise in Oil

The Offshore Imperative

Shell, Greenpeace and the Brent Spar

Shell Shock

A Pipeline Runs Through It

These often provide interpretations that can be compared against Shell’s official narrative.

First-person and activist material

Examples include:

Genocide in Nigeria

A Month and a Day

In the Shadow of a Saint

John Donovan, Shell’s Nightmare

Sir Henri Deterding and the Nazi History of Royal Dutch Shell

These are valuable precisely because their authors are participants or closely connected with the events described, but their claims should be distinguished from independent findings, court judgments and official records.

Critical environmental and human-rights literature

Examples include:

Where Vultures Feast

Curse of the Black Gold

Ogoni’s Agonies

The Politics of Bones

Oil and Insurgency in the Niger Delta

Once Upon a Time in the West

These provide the counter-history to Shell’s own corporate publications.

A Particularly Interesting Contrast

For anyone researching Shell seriously, some of the most revealing reading comes from placing opposing books side by side.

For early corporate history:

Henri Deterding — An International Oil Man

versus

Jochen Thies — Macht und Ohnmacht

and

John Donovan — Sir Henri Deterding and the Nazi History of Royal Dutch Shell.

For the history of Shell itself:

A History of Royal Dutch Shell

versus

Shell Shock

and the Donovan documentary material.

For Nigeria:

Shell’s own corporate histories can be compared with:

Ken Saro-Wiwa — Genocide in Nigeria

Ken Saro-Wiwa — A Month and a Day

Okonta and Douglas — Where Vultures Feast

and

Hunt — The Politics of Bones.

For corporate environmental decision-making:

Shell, Greenpeace and the Brent Spar

can be compared with Shell’s own retrospective account of Brent Spar, in which the company acknowledges that the episode damaged its reputation and changed its approach to public engagement. (Shell)

John Donovan’s Place in the Bibliography

The inclusion of my three Amazon Kindle books is justified on bibliographic rather than promotional grounds.

They constitute a published first-person record by someone whose relationship with Shell extends from being a commercial supplier to becoming a litigant, shareholder, website publisher and long-term corporate critic.

The three verified Amazon titles are:

John Donovan, Shell’s Nightmare: My Epic Feud with the Unscrupulous Oil Giant Royal Dutch Shell

Sir Henri Deterding and the Nazi History of Royal Dutch Shell

Toxic Facts About Shell Removed From Wikipedia — How Shell Became the Most Hated Brand in the World

My website currently identifies all three specifically as Amazon ebooks. (Royal Dutch Shell Group .com)

Editorial Note

This is not intended to be an exhaustive bibliography of every book that merely mentions Shell. That would run into hundreds or probably thousands of titles.

Instead, the criterion used here is that a book must satisfy at least one of the following:

  • Shell or one of its predecessors is the principal subject;
  • a substantial portion of the book concerns Shell;
  • the author was an important Shell figure;
  • the work documents a major Shell controversy or project;
  • or the book is important for understanding a distinctive Shell practice such as scenario planning.

That makes the list useful to researchers rather than simply large.

The descriptions are original summaries and are not copied from publishers’ jacket descriptions or copyrighted text.

Amazon and Kindle availability should be checked at the time of publication or purchase because electronic editions and regional availability can change.
